Tuesday Afternoon...

Do I date myself and say Tuesday Afternoon was a song by the Moody Blues? Who remembers the Moody Blues? Ok..enough music...on to BU SPORTS!

Monday was a rare weekday off for the sports information director. Looking back at the weekend, the Huskies won in football over CW Post 13-6; beat CW Post in field hockey, 8-1; lost to Gannon in men's soccer 4-0; and lost to Slippery Rock, 1-0, in women's soccer. On Sunday, the field hockey team beat Seton Hill, 7-0. On Monday, the women's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Atlantic Region championships.

Jamie Vanartsdalen was once again named the PSAC East Field Hockey Player of the Week. Jamie scored three goals and had two assists in the Huskies three wins last week. This is the second straight week she has won the award and the third time this season.

The field hockey team is now 11-1 on the year and is still ranked second in the latest D-II poll.

The football team moved up two spots in the national rankings to number eight in both the coaches (American Football Coaches Association) and the d2football.com media poll.

If you are in Bloomsburg on Thursday the field hockey and softball teams will be holding a Sneaker Sale in the Kehr Union Building from 8:30 am to 6 p.m. Stop by for some great bargins.

Don't forget the Huskies are holding Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 11th against East Stroudsburg. All families of active military personnel will be admitted free to the game. The game will be broadcast on Sports Fever TV so we hope to see a large crowd on hand.

Homecoming is Nov. 1st and great ready for a Gold Rush. We want you to "Be There...Be Loud...WEAR GOLD" Support the Huskies in their game with West Chester.

No action tonight for any Bloomsburg teams.

A rainy Friday...

It's a rainy Friday in Bloomsburg...

No action yesterday for any of the BU sports teams. Of course this weekend has a full slate. Check yesterday's blog for a rundown of which team is playing and where they are playing.



Bloomsburg received a check for $1,000 from the Honda Corporation in recognition of Jamie Vanartsdalen being named the D-II Field Hockey Player of the Year in 2007. The money will go the women's general athletic scholarship fund. Congrats again to Jamie.

Liberty Mutual is once again sponsoring the Coach of the Year program. Use the link on the side of this blog to vote for coach Danny Hale. Two years coach Hale finished in the top 10 nationally. Let's put him back there again once more. be sure to vote every day!

Big news to report...we're planning a Gold Rush day for homecoming on Nov. 1st with West Chester. We are asking all fans to wear gold to the game that day and make the home stands a sea of gold (that game is on TV and the stands will really look great covered in gold). A special commemorative t-shirt will be produced by the University Store and will go on sale in a few weeks. We'll let you know when they arrive.

Greetings on a Thursday....

Well, it's Thursday morning here in the sports information office and we are busy preparing for a full weekend of activities.

On Saturday, the Huskies will host Gannon men's soccer at noon and CW Post field hockey at 3 p.m. at Sports Stadium. Across the road, weather permitting, the first day of the women's tennis ITA regional championships will be held. The event runs Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Hitting the road on Saturday will be the football team which travels to CW Post on Long Island. Kickoff is at noon. The women's soccer team will be Slippery Rock on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

It Was a Busy Tuesday

It was a busy sports night for Bloomsburg University so there is a lot to report this morning.

The field hockey team rebounded from its loss on Saturday to rout Kutztown, 7-1. Jamie Vanartsdalen with three more goals for the Huskies, while Maggey Bloskey added two. Jamie now has 98 career goals and is now in the top 15 in career points among all NCAA Divisions and is in the top 20 career goals scored among NCAA Divisions. Bloomsburg is now 9-1 on the year, 3-0 in the PSAC East.

The men's soccer team played a 0-0, 2 OT time with West Chester yesterday afternoon. The Huskies held the edge in shots on goal, but had to settle for the tie. Bloomsburg is 4-1-4 overall, 1-1-2 in the PSAC East.

The women's soccer team lost to West Chester by a 2-1 score. Bloomsburg falls to 6-2, 3-2 in the PSAC East.

The men's and women's tennis teams blew past East Stroudsburg last night. The women cruised to a 9-0 win and the men came up with an 8-1 victory. The women are now 3-1 on the year, while the men are 2-0.

After a busy night last night, things quiet down for the Huskies with no action today, tomorrow or Friday.

Oct. 11th...Military Appreciation Day at football. All families of active military personnel admitted free. We're also collecting items for our troops overseas.
Nov. 1st...Homecoming...kickoff at a special time...3:30 p.m. (We'll finish under the lights!)

Tuesday Ramblings....

There were no events yesterday for any Bloomsburg teams, but that does not mean we don't have some news.

Yesterday I mentioned that Greg Myers was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week for his play. Yesterday afternoon Jamie Vanartsdalen was named the PSAC East Field Hockey Player of the Week. It is the second time that Jamie has been so honored this year. The football team remains ranked 10th in the country in Division II according to the American Football Coaches Association.

The BU Athletics Hall of Fame will be holding its annual induction ceremony on Friday, Oct. 10th. This year's Hall of Fame inductees are Jim Garman '59; Roly Lamy '91; Keith Torok '79; Tim Pritchard '90 and Sharon Reilly Zemaitis '90. Tickets to the event are $35 and can be purchased by calling to the sports information office at 570-389-4413.

It's Monday...let's recap the weekend!

Monday morning...time to take a breath after a busy Saturday of sports for the Huskies.

The football team improved to 4-0 on the year after a 31-21 win over Kutztown. The Huskies got two TD passes from Dan Latorre to Kyle Ream and Greg Myers led the defense with 10 tackles. Myers was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Bloomsburg has now won nine straight games dating back to last year.

The men's soccer team kept their winning ways going with a 1-0 win over NYIT. Mike Jones scored the game's lone goal. Bloomsburg is nos 4-1-3 on the year and has already surpassed its win total from a year ago.

The women's soccer team is now 6-1 after a 2-0 win over Clarion. Ashley Brucker and Kelsey Stoka each scored for BU.

The cross country team turned in a solid performance at the Iona College Meet of Champions.Ashley Shuck was 27th in a field of 224 and was the first finisher from a D-II school. The meet featured a majority of teams from NCAA D-I and several regionally ranked D-II teams.

The women's tennis teams split a pair of matches on Saturday. The Huskies sank the Ship (Shippensburg) 9-0, but lost to Cal, 9-0. The Huskies are now 2-1 on the year.

And it's hard to write this, but the BU field hockey team lost to Shippensburg, 3-2. It was the first time a team had scored more than one goal on the Huskies this season and was the lowest offensive output for the Huskies. The game though was a non-division matchup (the PSAC has gone to a two-division set-up for field hockey this year) so it does not affect the Huskies standings in the PSAC. Bloomsburg is now 8-1 on the season.

There is no action today for any Bloomsburg teams.

Another Game...Another Record

The BU field hockey team beat Mansfield on Thursday night by an 8-0 score. In the game, Jamie Vanartsdalen scored two goals and set another Division II record. This one was most career goals. Jamie now has 94 in her career breaking the mark of 93 set by Terry Voit of Longwood accomplished during the Gerald Ford administration (1974-77). Jamie also added two assists and is now tied for number two all-time in career assists in NCAA history with 46. Not bad for a player that walked on to the Huskies several years ago! BU is now 8-0 and will play at Shippensburg on Saturday at noon.

No action for any BU teams today.

Tomorrow along with field hockey going to Shippensburg, the women's tennis team will be there for matches with Ship and Cal. The cross country team as we noted in yesterday's post will be at the Iona Meet of Champions.

The football team, 3-0, ends a three-game homestand with a PSAC-East matchup with Kutztown. Kickoff at 1 p.m. It's Bloomsburg Fair Day and all fans will get a $1 off coupon for the opening day of the Fair. Come see the Huskies then head over to the Fair. All BU students will have a chance to win tickets to See Three Days Grace and Sick Puppies. All alums are encouraged to stop by the Alumni Tent to register for free prizes and of course stop by the University Store tent to purchase officially licensed BU merchandise.

The men's soccer team will be hosting New York Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Huskies are off to a 3-1-3 start this season.
