COACHES VS. CANCER
Bloomsburg University men's soccer coach Paul Payne has announced the development of 'Red Card Cancer,' a program designed to bring awareness through the soccer coaching community in the fight against cancer.

'Red Card Cancer' will be an annual event to be held the first Saturday of October (Oct. 3 this year) and will feature the men's and women's soccer teams of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference joining in the battle to fight cancer.

On the day of the game, teams will wear specially designed t-shirts during pregame warm-ups that will feature the "Red Card Cancer" logo. A collection will be taken up during the game for the American Cancer Society.

"Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer," said Payne. "Those of us in soccer community have lost some influential people the last few years. Joe Bochicchio, a long time coach of the women's program at the University of Scranton, and Charlotte Moran, who was the president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) and was one of the most active organizers for girls' and women's soccer in America, have been taken from us by this dreaded disease. It is time we help in the fight and finally hand a red card to cancer."

Payne hopes to grow this program into a national event in the next few years. "It would be so rewarding to see the first Saturday in October set aside for the 'Red Card Cancer' event," Payne continued. "The more money we raise the sooner that cancer could be given a permanent seat on the sidelines."

Any team wishing to purchase the official t-shirt for the event should go to Angelo's Soccer Corner web site at www.soccercorner.com . All the money raised from the sale of the t-shirts will go to the Red Card Cancer program.

Among the colleges and universities that will be participating in this program are Shippensburg University, West Chester, Slippery Rock, Mansfield, Susquehanna University, the University of Scranton, Clarion, Millersville and East Stroudsburg along with Abington Heights High School in Lackawanna County.

Start of the First Week of Classes

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 12:43 PM

Here is the Huskies Update for Monday, Aug. 31st.

Today is the start of classes at Bloomsburg for the 2009-10 school year. A crazy day trying to find a parking space!

FOOTBALL
Congrats go out to middle linebacker Anthony Smith who was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week for his play against Ashland. Smith made a career-high 11 tackles in the Huskies 10-7 win over the Eagles. We'll be posting an interview with Anthony sometime tomorrow asking him about his award. Be sure to check your Twitter updates from me for when that gets posted.

FIELD HOCKEY
The Huskies ran their winning streak to 17 games dating back to last year with two wins over the weekend. Bloomsburg beat Houghton College 5-0 and Stonehill College 4-0 over the weekend. Amanda Riley scored three goals in the two games to lead the Huskies. Bloomsburg, winners of 28 of their last 29 games dating to 2007, will host Seton Hill College on Thursday at 4 p.m.

FOOTBALL FOLLOW-UP
A few folks who attended the Huskies opener with Ashland have inquired about the volume of the PA system. Sitting inside the press box I have to admit I don;t know how loud the PA sounds in the crowd. Rest assured that for the CW Post game on Sept. 26 we'll tone it down for everyone!

BU MAGAZINE

Check out the new issue of the Bloomsburg University magazine here. There is a cover story on BU quarterback Dan Latorre as well as some other sports stories.

TODAY
There is no action today for any Bloomsburg University sports team.

We're Getting Closer

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:49 AM

Good afternoon. Here is the Huskies Update for Tuesday, July 28th.

Well, we are now just 29 days away from the start of the 2009-10 sports season at Bloomsburg. On Aug. 27th the Huskies host a women's soccer game at 1 p.m. and a football game at 6 p.m. (nothing like throwing the SID office right into the fire!) I hope you are making plans to be with us that day for one of those two events. It is going to be exciting.

TWITTER
I hope you have signed up for a Twitter account and are following the Huskies. All this week we are playing BU football trivia on Twitter with the first person with the correct answer to each day's question winning two tickets to the home opener with Ashland.

FOOTBALL START TIMES
I've had a few people drop me notes about the varied start times for football this fall. The one that turns the most heads is the 5 p.m. start with Millersville. The reason for the late start time that day is not TV, but the fact that BU is hosting a large cross country invitational that day and there would be no parking for all the teams here for the meet as well as all the fans for football. Also, the 3:30 p.m. start time on homecoming went over very well last year and so everyone agreed to give it another shot. Hope that answers all the questions.

Of course...if you ever have a question about something dealing with BU athletics just drop me a line. If you have any photos of yourself showing your Husky pride, please send it to me at tmcguire@bloomu.edu and we'll use it in the blog.

Lots to Write About Today

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 7:00 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Lots going on as we hit the middle part of summer (although it is still much too cool for my taste!)

PASSING OF TWO INDIVIDUALS
It is with sadness that I report on the passing of two folks associated with BU athletics. The first is Dr. Preston Herring. Dr. Herring was the VP for Student Life here at Bloomsburg and helped oversee the athletic department. He was an ardent supporter of athletics and will be missed by everyone.

The other passing I have to report on is that of former swim coach Eli McLaughlin. I only got to meet Eli once or twice, but I know his former athletes truly were inspired by him and will miss his being around. Read Eli's obituary here.

YOU TUBE

Two new videos posted on the Huskies You Tube channel. One is with baseball coach Mike Collins talking about his upcoming golf outing, while the other is with former BU All-American Jahri Evans. Check out the Huskies You Tube channel here.

MARKET STREET MILE
Interim cross country coach Bernie Empie is preparing for the annual Market Street Mile race at the end of August. Check out the Huskies web site later today for a link to the application.

TWITTER CONTEST
If you haven't signed up to follow the Huskies on Twitter...do so before July 26th. The week of July 26th we'll holding a BU football trivia contest each week day with the winner (the first person to email me with the correct answer) receiving a pair of tickets to the home opener on Aug. 27th against Ashland. The questions will only be announced via Twitter with all the answers being found on the Huskies football web pages. Go to this page to sign up. Be sure to put the settings so you receive updates and our questions as text messages.

FOOTBALL TICKET PRICES
The price for an adult ticket for football this season will be $10, while students (12-18) will be $5. There will be no charge for parking this year. While it is a slight increase from last year, it is still one of the best bargins in sports since the Huskies have posted a record at Redman Stadium this decade of 45-8!

NEW INTERN IN SID OFFICE
I am pleased to announce that the SID office will now have some full-time help with the addition of Ryan Rebholz as a full-time intern. Ryan comes to BU from East Stroudsburg where he served as a grad assistant in the SID office there. He has also previously worked at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you get to any BU sporting events hopefully you'll see Ryan running around and giving me a bit of a break!

Our next update will be the week of July 26th as I get in one more week of vacation before the start of a busy month of August. Remember....sign up for Twitter!

Moving Through July

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:15 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Thursday, July 9th.

Well we are rapidly moving through July getting ready for the start of another sports season.

Things are pretty quiet in athletics and sports info on the public side of things, but busy behind the scenes. Sports info is working on media guides, schedule cards, promotions for the upcoming year along with getting some new sponsors. It's never really slow anymore!

BASEBALL
Coach Mike Collins from baseball announced today that he will be holding his annual golf outing on Sunday, Oct. 4. This is a great event and benefits the baseball scholarship fund. If you would like to play go to this page to download a camp brochure.

CALLING ALL YOU RUNNERS
Coach Bernie Empie from cross country will be holding the annual Market Street Mile here in town on Friday, Aug. 28th. It's a great event for everyone (there are even 1/2 and 1/4 races)! We'll be posting an application form on-line in the next few days so before to look out for that.

That's all for now. We'll be back next week with more news from the Huskies.

Tomorrow...track and field will be at St. Francis of PA for a meet, while the baseball team is at IUP. The baseball team wraps up the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against IUP.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
This comes to us from Bill, class of 1988. "What does someone in your role as sports information do all summer? There are no sports going on."

Thanks for the question Bill. What does the SID do all summer long. I get that a lot. Well, for one...take a breath. I go pretty hard for nine months with little chance to get time off. So in the summer I will take a couple of weeks to recharge the batteries, so-to-speak. But, mostly I spend the time getting ready for another sports season. Media guides need to be written, corporate sponsors need to be contacted, both new and old. Before I know it August is here and football season is upon us. Of course, we will still have teams in the playoffs till at least the middle of May so that is keeping me busy till then.

Have a question about BU..drop me a note in e-mail and I will try and answer it.

Thursday Ramblings

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 8:23 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Thursday, April 9th.

Sorry I missed blogging yesterday. I was out of the office in the AM and then up at both baseball and softball in the afternoon. Let me tell you...it was COLD!!! Sitting outside for 5 hours keeping stats at baseball and softball is non-glamorous part of this job. Six layers of clothes, two pairs of socks, a hat and two pairs of gloves and I was still cold.

SOFTBALL

The Huskies swept a pair of games from Mansfield winning 4-0 and 6-2. The Huskies play today at Clarion. The game was moved up a day due to anticipated rain in tomorrow's forecast. BU is now 22-4 on the year and ranked 19th in the country.

TENNIS

The BU men and women both won yesterday at Millersvile. The men won 8-1 and the women won 9-0. The Huskies host Kutztown today at 3:30 p.m.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
This comes from Kiley...a 2001 grad of BU...
"What is the process for nominating someone for the BU Athletic Hall of Fame?"

I get this one a lot Kiley...and thanks for asking. Nominations for the BU Athletic Hall of Fame can be done in a variety of ways. As chair of the committee, I assemble all the names for nomination during the course of the year.

First a person needs to be gone from BU for 10 years before they can be considered. Nominations can be submitted to me. I need name, year of graduation, and the sport or sports he/she played while here. Any other details you might have will help. That can be put into an e-mail or a had copy letter and mailed or now go online to fill out the nomination form we have set up. Anyone can nominate a person, including the person him/herself.

The committee meets in December to decide the nominees for the following year. Names stay in nomination for a period of five years, but can be resubmitted.

The committee looks for honors won...All-American, All-Region, etc. Also, stats, success of team in some cases and in cases where positions have no stats, the importance to the team of this player.

Hope that helps.

Remember if you have a question about BU athletics you would like answered, be sure to drop me a note in e-mail with the question and each Thursday we'll pick a new one to write about.

POLL QUESTION
Our new poll question will be posted later on Thursday. Be sure to check it out.
