A daily look at the Bloomsburg University Athletic teams.

Monday...Time for A Review

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:40 AM

Hi everyone...it's Monday. Time for a look back at the weekend.

WRESTLING
The wrestling team started the weekend off for the Huskies with a convincing win over EWL-rival Lock Haven by a score of 29-9. George Hickman at 149 pulled the upset when he pinned 22md ranked Matt Fittery. Two matches later Ricky Schmelyun added his 15th pin of the season as the Huskies posted the easy win. Nice to see a lot of former alums back for the event. Glad you were able to visit with us.

BASKETBALL
The basketball teams took to the court on Saturday and the women came away with a 63-61 win over division-leading West Chester, while the men dropped a 67-53 game to the Golden Rams. The game featured the Huskies wearing pink shooting shirts, while a lot group of fans were also clad in pink to help the Huskies with their Pink Zone/Coaches vs. Cancer event. Also, we had some alums on hand for an event as well so good to see them back.

TRACK

The Huskies indoor teams competed at the Bucknell Winter Classic and BU had a couple of competitors earn a spot into the PSAC championships.

TENNIS

The women's team lost to Slippery Rock, 6-3, on Sunday. It was the Huskies first competition of the spring portion of their schedule.

SCHEDULES
Speaking of schedules, I had a few people stop me over the weekend and ask about spring schedule cards. Well they are right now at the printer. When they arrive on my desk we will be getting them around town and campus. Now...I know some of you are saying..."Tom...I'm not near campus." Well, just send me your name and address in an e-mail and I will get one out to you!

DID YOU SEE?
If you were at the men's basketball game the other day you saw a crazy play. If not, let me describe it. Late in the game a player for WCU was chasing a ball that was heading out of bounds. Since sports info is now on the floor (due to the closing of the press box with bleacher trouble), the player jumped up from the floor right onto our table with our computer and other gear and over the heads of my student staff. It was one of the craziest things ever to happen in my 20 years of sports information work.

THANKS
A special thanks on Saturday to our game sponsors...Holiday Inn Express, Econo Lodge, Perkins and Quaker Steak and Lube. be sure to visit them at Exit 232 off of I-80 next time you are in town. We appreciate their support of Bloomsburg University and glad they are HUSKY PROUD!

What's Happening on a Tuesday?

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 8:02 AM

Hi everyone. It's Tuesday and welcome to the Huskies Update Blog.

No action yesterday or today for any Bloomsburg teams so we'll focus on some other items today.

LACROSSE
The lacrosse team recently had a few of their recruits appear in a story from their hometown area. Check it out by clicking HERE.

TRACK
A story on BU track athlete Misha Litvinov appeared in today's Wilkes-Barre Times Leader. Here is the story.

GOOD START FOR LITVINOV – It didn’t take Misha Litvinov (Hazleton Area) long to get into the swing of things as a distance runner with the Bloomsburg men’s track team this winter.

The junior distance runner qualified for the PSAC Championships in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs in his first two meets. His times were 8:58.07 in the 3K and 15:48.36 in the 5K.

“Heading toward the championships we will continue to emphasize his strength work while fine-tuning his speed,” first-year coach Bernard Empie said. “I feel Misha can make a big contribution to the men’s team score at the PSACs.”

Empie has some thoughts about Litvinov’s future with the Huskies.

“Misha has a full academic year left at Bloomsburg but athletically he has just the cross country season,” the coach said. “I anticipate red-shirting him this spring to save an outdoor track season. That will enable us to take another year to work on some weaknesses to make him more effective at 10k.”

BE HUSKY PROUD!

So Sorry For My Absence

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 4:43 PM

TUESDAY, FEB. 3

Well it has been a long time since I've had the opportunity to take a few minutes and write a blog. My apologies to all the loyal fans of the Huskies. Things just get real busy sometimes in the office.

Let's try and get you caught up on what is going on with BU sports.

We are, of course, well into the winter sports season. Just one month left to go. The women's team has struggled a bit after getting out to a good start. If you have not see the Huskies play, you need to get out and see freshman Kelsey Gallagher. She is a real player and has earned the PSAC East Freshman of the Week award 6 times!

The men's team has been hurt by injuries and some bad breaks. Coach John Sanow's crew nearlhy pulled out a big win last week, but Jesse Betar's half-court shot hit the front of the rim at the buzzer.

The wrestling team has been battling through a very tough schedule. The Huskies had five guys ranked nationally earlier this season and Matt Moley, an All-American a year ago, is ranked ninth at his weight in one poll.

The swim teams have been coming along nicely for new coach Stu Marvin. They recently had their final home match of the season and a large, enthusiastic crowd was on hand to see the Huskies. Look for some good things from these teams at the PSAC championships.

The indoor track teams are well into their seasons now for coach Bernie Empie. Lots of new records from the first full-fledged track team in many years here at BU.

HUSKIES FOR HOPE
Coming up on Feb. 14th the men's and women's basketball teams invite you to help them raise awareness of cancer through a Coaches versus Cancer and WBCA Pink Zone event called Huskies for Hope. Tipoff against West Chester is set for 1 and 3 p.m. that day. Come out and help the Huskies take a bite out of cancer.

HALL OF FAME
Do you know of a deserving candidate for the BU Athletic Hall of Fame? Check out the front page of the BU sports web site for a link (right near our blog link) for a form to nominate someone to the Hall of Fame.

I promise to try and do better this month with the updates!
