Looking Back at the Weekend

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:33 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Monday, March 30th.

THIS PAST WEEKEND
A mixed bag of results for the Huskies this past weekend. The softball team won four games (2 Friday and 2 Saturday). In the wins on Saturday over Slippery Rock, the Huskies got a grand slam homer from Lacy Mauro in one game and a three-run homer from Lori Neyhard in the other game. BU is now 17-3 on the year and play at Holy Family tomorrow.

The baseball team dropped two twinbills to East Stroudsburg to fall to 11-17 on the season. The Huskies play at Lock Haven tomorrow.

The lacrosse team crushed Edinboro, 24-3, then lost a heart-breaker to 6th-ranked Mercyhurst 15-14 in double overtime. The Huskies are now 6-2.

The track teams were at Susquehanna on Saturday and had several PSAC qualifying performances. The Huskies compete at the PSAC East Challenge meet this Saturday at Millersville.

SCHEDULE CHANGE
There has been a schedule change in regards to women's tennis tomorrow. Instead of going to Cheyney for a women's match, the Wolves will be coming here for a 5 p.m. start. Also, Saturday's West Chester match has been moved up to 10 a.m.

CONGRATS TO VILLANOVA
Congrats to Villanova for advancing to the NCAA D-I Final Four. The AD down there is none other than BU Alum Vince Nicastro. Way to go Vince. Hope the Wildcats can bring home the big prize.

TODAY
Things are quiet today for the Huskies. No action.

POLL

The last day to vote in our weekly poll is Monday through Tuesday morning. Make sure you let us know your opinion.

A Rainy Thursday

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:15 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Thursday, March 26.

We've got rain right now in Bloomsburg, but the lacrosse game is still on for 4 p.m.

BASEBALL
Yesterday the Huskies took on Bucknell and lost 13-8. Kevin Ward had another big game for the Huskies going 3-4 with a homer and a couple of RBI. Bloomsburg will host East Stroudsburg tomorrow at Litwhiler Field starting at 1 p.m.

SOFTBALL

The Huskies play at IUP tomorrow, then come back home to face Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jan Hutchinson Field.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
I haven't seen the baseball field in awhile - when will it be complete and what were the upgrades? Doyle '57

Well...the new dugouts and backstop and netting behind home plate are in as well as new fencing down both lines (less foul territory now...good for hitters...bad for pitchers). The dugout benches, new bleachers and some landscaping will be done as the season progresses. Certainly by the 2010 season everything will be done. Overall taking shaping.

If you have a question you'd like answered about BU sports, or the BU sports info office, drop me a note at tmcguire@bloomu.edu.

That's all for today.

Catching up from Monday...the Huskies beat Shippensburg 16-15 on a Tia Mazzie goal with 2:04 left to play. The Huskies are now 4-1 on the year and play at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. with Kutztown.

SOFTBALL
The Huskies beat Clarion yesterday 10-0 and 9-0 with both games going five innings. Tara Reed went a combined 4-6 with six RBI and also tossed a two-hit shutout in game two. Shavaun Fisher tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener. Bloomsburg is now 11-3 on the year.

Here is the Huskies Update for Monday, March 23rd.

Well, it's Monday again. Where did the weekend go?

WRESTLING
Congrats to Matt Moley on finishing sixth at the NCAA D-I wrestling championships. Moley earned All-American honors for the second straight year and improved two spots from last year's eighth place finish. A photo of Matt with his sixth place award is now posted at click on story about Matt Moley.

SOFTBALL
The Huskies won three times and lost twice at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament over the weekend. Shavaun Fisher won two of the Huskies three games, while Jenna Hampton hit .364 over the course of four games. Bloomsburg will host it home opener tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Clarion.

BASEBALL
The Huskies went 1-3 in a series with Millersville over the weekend. In the Huskies 13-5 win on Friday, Kevin Ward led the way for Bloomsburg, going 2-4 with five RBI, while Matt Austin went 3-5 with two RBI. Mitch Troy picked up the victory on the mound for the Huskies. The Huskies plat Bucknell Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Getting Ready for the Weekend

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 8:35 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Friday, March 20th.

It's Friday...another cold one in Bloomsburg. The weekend though is looking pretty good. I'd still bring a lot of layers though for tomorrow's baseball doubleheader. The weather on the hill is always cooler than everywhere else.

WRESTLING
Matt Moley and Ricky Schmelyun are still alive on day two of the NCAA D-I wrestling championships. Both guys went 1-1 yesterday. Ian Moser and George Hickman dropped both of their matches and were eliminated. We'll post an update on the BU sports web site with news about today's action.

BASEBALL
The Huskies are at Millersville today for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before opening the home season tomorrow at 1 p.m. Not all the upgrades are completely finished...some landscaping mostly, but the new dugouts are in place as well as as new fencing and a nice brick backstop...kind of looks like the brick behind home plate at Wrigley Field.

SOFTBALL
Well, the softball doubleheader that was planned for today at Lincoln has been cancelled. The Huskies can't catch a break this year. They are off to Virginia now for a weekend tournament. Results will be on the web site.

TRACK
Coach Bernie Empie will take his team to West Chester today for an invitational. Results tonight on the web site.

NOT PLAYING
No lacrosse or tennis this weekend.

I think that covers all the bases. One thing...I neglected to send out a notice of an update yesterday, but there was one done. Read one of the questions we have received towards the end of the posting.

Thursday and It's Cold Again

Written by Bloomsburg Sports Info on 10:05 AM

Here is the Huskies Update for Thursday, March 19th.

Well the cold weather has returned to Bloomsburg. We get one warm day followed by a couple of cold ones.

WRESTLING
The NCAA D-I wrestling championships two matches are in the books and its not good news for the Huskies. Both Ian Moser and George Hickman got pinned in their opening round matches. Matt Moley and Ricky Schmelyun are both set to wrestle in the next hour or so.

LACROSSE
The Huskies lost to the top-ranked team in D-II, West Chester, on Wednesday by a score of 18-2. Bloomsburg, 3-1, 1-1 in the PSAC East, plays at Shippensburg on Monday at 4 p.m.

BASEBALL
Tomorrow the baseball team heads to Millersville for a twinbill starting at 1 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to face the Marauders in a 1 p.m. twinbill.

SOFTBALL
The softball team has a doubleheader scheduled tomorrow (not on the regular schedule) at Lincoln University starting at 2 p.m. The Huskies play in Virginia over the weekend.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
A few days back I asked if anyone had any questions about the workings of sports information or BU athletics. Our first question came in....

"Why is Pat Summit always regarded as being the winningest female coach in NCAA history when our own Jan Hutchinson has a 600-win margin?" Barb '72

Thanks for the question Barb...generally when TV announcers talk about Pat Summitt being the winningest female coach they are referring only to basketball. They aren't talking about overall in all college sports. Otherwise...yes...Jan Hutchinson has quite a big lead over the Tennessee head coach.

Again...if you have anything you'd like to know just shoot me an e-mail.
